Naissance de l'art contemporain. 1945-1970. Une histoire mondiale

Naissance de l'art contemporain. 1945-1970. Une histoire mondiale

Autor: Beatrice Joyeux-prunel

The Black Hole of the Camera

The Black Hole of the Camera

Autor: J.j. Murphy

Número de Páginas: 320

“One acclaimed filmmaker takes the measure of another! Murphy’s candid and richly personal account of Andy Warhol’s filmmaking is a brilliant contribution to our understanding of one of cinema’s most original and prolific masters, exploring the artist's multiple forms of psychodrama with a filmmaker’s insight and attention to detail. As more and more of the restored Warhol films become available, this book will remain an indispensable handbook for film historians and general moviegoers alike—especially because it is such a genuine pleasure to read."—David E. James, author of The Most Typical Avant-Garde: History and Geography of Minor Cinemas in Los Angeles. “Those of us who care about independent cinema have always struggled with Andy Warhol’s massive oeuvre. At long last J.J. Murphy, who has spent a lifetime making contributions to independent cinema, has undertaken the Herculean task of helping us understand Warhol’s development as a filmmaker. Murphy’s precision, stamina, and passion are evident in this examination of an immense body of work—as is his ability to report what he has discovered in a readable and informative manner. The Black Hole of the...

La invención de la creatividad

La invención de la creatividad

Autor: Andreas Reckwitz

The Golden Avant-garde

The Golden Avant-garde

They draw the conclusion that artists have become adept at manipulating the same forces that they seek to exaggerate and articulate in their work.

Politisierter Konsum - konsumierte Politik

Politisierter Konsum - konsumierte Politik

Hiding Man

Hiding Man

Autor: Tracy Daugherty

Número de Páginas: 425

In the 1960s Donald Barthelme came to prominence as the leader of the Postmodern movement. He was a fixture at the New Yorker, publishing more than 100 short stories, including such masterpieces as "Me and Miss Mandible," the tale of a thirty-five-year-old sent to elementary school by clerical error, and "A Shower of Gold," in which a sculptor agrees to appear on the existentialist game show Who Am I? He had a dynamic relationship with his father that influenced much of his fiction. He worked as an editor, a designer, a curator, a news reporter, and a teacher. He was at the forefront of literary Greenwich Village which saw him develop lasting friendships with Thomas Pynchon, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Wolfe, Grace Paley, and Norman Mailer. Married four times, he had a volatile private life. He died of cancer in 1989. The recipient of many prestigious literary awards, he is best remembered for the classic novels Snow White, The Dead Father, and many short stories, all of which remain in print today. Hiding Man is the first biography of Donald Barthelme, and it is nothing short of a masterpiece.

J.G. Ballard's Surrealist Imagination

J.G. Ballard's Surrealist Imagination

Autor: Jeannette Baxter

Número de Páginas: 253

Making the case that J. G. Ballard's fictional and non-fictional writings must be read within the framework of Surrealism, Jeannette Baxter argues for a radical revisioning of Ballard that takes account of the political and ethical dimensions of his work. Ballard's appropriation of diverse Surrealist aesthetic forms and political writings, Baxter suggests, are mobilised to contest official narratives of postwar history and culture and offer a series of counter-historical and counter-cultural critiques. Thus Ballard's work must be understood as an exercise in Surrealist historiography that is politically and ethically engaged. Placing Ballard's illustrated texts within this critical framework permits Baxter to explore the effects of photographs, drawings, and other visual symbols on the reading experience and the production of meaning. Ballard's textual spectacles raise a variety of questions about the shifting role of the reader and the function of the written text within a predominantly visual culture, while acknowledging the visual contexts of Ballard's Surrealist writings allows a very different historical picture of the author and his work to emerge.

Spiritual Moderns

Spiritual Moderns

Autor: Erika Doss

Número de Páginas: 348

Examines how and why religion matters in the history of modern American art. Andy Warhol is one of the best-known American artists of the twentieth century. He was also an observant Catholic who carried a rosary, went to mass regularly, kept a Bible by his bedside, and depicted religious subjects throughout his career. Warhol was a spiritual modern: a modern artist who appropriated religious images, beliefs, and practices to create a distinctive style of American art. Spiritual Moderns centers on four American artists who were both modern and religious. Joseph Cornell, who showed with the Surrealists, was a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist. Mark Tobey created pioneering works of Abstract Expressionism and was a follower of the Bahá’í Faith. Agnes Pelton was a Symbolist painter who embraced metaphysical movements including New Thought, Theosophy, and Agni Yoga. And Warhol, a leading figure in Pop art, was a lifelong Catholic. Working with biographical materials, social history, affect theory, and the tools of art history, Doss traces the linked subjects of art and religion and proposes a revised interpretation of American modernism.

Das Künstlerinterview

Das Künstlerinterview

Autor: Christoph Lichtin

Andy Warhol's Religious and Ethnic Roots

Andy Warhol's Religious and Ethnic Roots

Autor: Raymond M. Herbenick

Número de Páginas: 294

Sharing Warhol's roots in a Pittsburgh Carpatho-Rusyn community, Hebenick (philosophy, U. of Dayton, Ohio) pays tribute on the 10th anniversary of the pop artist's death to his work and their heritage rooted in NE Slovakia, Ukraine, and Poland. In four studies (ethnographic, biographical, autobiographical, and aesthetic), the author traces the style of the creator of pop icons like silk-screened Campbell's soup cans and Marilyn Monroe images to the religiously-based folk art of Easter egg decorating (pysanky) and the sacred icons of the Greek Orthodox church. The only art appears on the cover and is traditional, not that of Warhol. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Invention of Creativity

The Invention of Creativity

Autor: Andreas Reckwitz

Número de Páginas: 300

Contemporary society has seen an unprecedented rise in both the demand and the desire to be creative, to bring something new into the world. Once the reserve of artistic subcultures, creativity has now become a universal model for culture and an imperative in many parts of society. In this new book, cultural sociologist Andreas Reckwitz investigates how the ideal of creativity has grown into a major social force, from the art of the avant-garde and postmodernism to the ‘creative industries’ and the innovation economy, the psychology of creativity and self-growth, the media representation of creative stars, and the urban design of ‘creative cities’. Where creativity is often assumed to be a force for good, Reckwitz looks critically at how this imperative has developed from the 1970s to the present day. Though we may well perceive creativity as the realization of some natural and innate potential within us, it has rather to be understood within the structures of a very specific culture of the new in late modern society. The Invention of Creativity is a bold and refreshing counter to conventional wisdom that shows how our age is defined by radical and restrictive processes of ...
